What’s New in IBM Spectrum Protect 8.1

One more new release from IBM Spectrum Protect, it’s nice to see the IBM Continues effort on improving IBM Spectrum Protect. As you know IBM Tivoli Storage manager brand name changes announcement made beginning from 7.1.3 version. however, the brand name remains same as Tivoli Storage manager in all documents and technotes and software code level.  With the new release of IBM Spectrum Protect 8.1 you will see the complete rebranding been updated in the software and documents as well.

IBM Spectrum Protect Version 8.1 is the next generation of IBM® Tivoli® Storage Manager. This new release represents more than a name change in the user interface and documentation. It is an evolution to a higher level of data protection that is designed to meet the complex demands of today’s world.

Let’s get to details of What’s New in the IBM Spectrum Protect 8.1

What’s New in IBM Spectrum Protect 8.1

Complete Brand Transition:

Secure communications by using the TLS 1.2 protocol

IBM Spectrum Protect™ Version 8.1 secures communications for servers, clients, and storage agents by enabling the Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.2 protocol. TLS 1.2 provides a higher level of security than previous TLS levels.

Convert a tape storage pool to a container storage pool

With IBM Spectrum Protect™ Version 8.1, you can convert a storage pool that uses a tape device class to a directory container or cloud-container storage pool.

By converting storage pools to container storage pools, you remove the need for volume reclamation. In this way, you can improve server performance and reduce the amount of required storage hardware. Data that is stored in container storage pools can use both inline data deduplication and inline compression.

Software upgrade for the server database manage:

IBM Spectrum Protect™ Version 8.1 is installed with V11.1 of the IBM® DB2® database software. The DB2 technology provides management functions for the server database. The previous IBM Spectrum Protect server release was packaged with a DB2 V10.5 database.

You can upgrade V6.3 and V7 servers directly to V8.1. Upgrades from other versions to V8.1 are not supported.

REGISTER NODE command no longer creates an administrative user ID by default

Beginning with IBM Spectrum Protect™ Version 8.1, the REGISTER NODE command does not automatically create an administrative user ID that matches the node name. This product update is designed to optimize user authentication to a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server.

This product update does not affect existing client nodes, but can affect the process of registering new client nodes, including but not limited to nodes for IBM Spectrum Protect backup-archive clients. In some cases, you might have to create an administrative user ID when you register a node. You can create the administrative user ID by issuing the REGISTER NODE command and specifying the USERID parameter:

register node node_name password userid=node_name

where node_name specifies the node name and password specifies the node password.

Optimise user authentication to an Active Directory database

BM Spectrum Protect™ Version 8.1 optimizes the process of authenticating users to an Active Directory database on a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server.

The process is optimized because of a change in the way that nodes are registered:

With IBM Spectrum Protect V7.1.7, when you registered a node, an administrative user ID with the same name was created automatically. This feature caused potential complications for users of the LDAP authentication method that was introduced in IBM Spectrum Protect V7.1.7. With that authentication method, sometimes known as integrated mode, a matching node name and administrative user ID resolve to a single LDAP ID. As a result, automatic password changes could change the same password twice, causing the password to become unknown to the administrative user ID. Alternatively, password update operations could fail.

With IBM Spectrum Protect V8.1, when you register a node, no administrative user ID is created automatically. If you want to specify an administrative user ID, you can use the USERID parameter on the REGISTER NODE command. If you use integrated mode for LDAP authentication, ensure that the node name and administrative user ID do not match.

Increased flexibility for protecting and reclaiming tape volumes in container-copy storage pools

With IBM Spectrum Protect™ Version 8.1, you can reclaim tape volumes in a container-copy storage pool without running a protection operation. Similarly, you can protect a container-copy storage pool without running a reclamation operation.

When you issue the PROTECT STGPOOL command and the target storage pool is a container-copy storage pool, both protection and reclamation operations run by default. The preferred practice is to run both protection and reclamation operations. However, to save time, you can run only the storage pool protection operation or only reclamation, or you can limit the number of tape volumes that are reclaimed.

Supported operating systems

With IBM Spectrum Protect™ Version 8.1, you can install the server on an IBM® AIX®, Linux on System z®, Linux x86_64, or a Microsoft Windows operating system. To take advantage of new product features, install IBM Spectrum Protect V8.1 on one of the supported operating systems.

Support for the following operating systems is discontinued:HP-UX
Linux on Power Systems™ (big endian)
Oracle Solaris

Monitor the system without using SNMP

With IBM Spectrum Protect™ Version 8.1, the simple network management protocol (SNMP) is no longer available for communications with an SNMP Distributed Protocol Interface (DPI) subagent. You cannot configure the SNMP heartbeat monitor or log events to an SNMP event receiver.

The preferred method of monitoring system operations is to use the Operations Center. You can view system status in the Operations Center user interface or configure email reports to track specific items.
