Today we are going to learn about what is Storage Pools and how to configure them, Storage Pool is logical entry in IBM Spectrum Protect(TSM), All Tivoli Storage Manager Client data is stored in the TSM Storage Repository which can consist of different storage devices, such as disk, tape, optical drive or cloud storage.
Tivoli Storage Manager has it’s own model to handle the storage devices, Tivoli storage manager is different approach compare to others. TSM concentrates on managing data objects rather than managing backup tapes. Objects can be files, directories or logical volumes or any records from the database or any block of data.
Learn More about Storage Pool and related components read my previous post
Some of the Important things about Storage pool.
- A Storage Pool is built up from one or more Storage pool volumes
- TSM can organizes storage pools in one or more hierarchical structure.
- Storage Hierarchy can span in multiple server instances
- Data object automatic migration to one Storage hierarchy to another
- Copy data object either asynchronously or synchronously
Note:- Storage Pool Logical entry is configured to Device Class Logical Entry for handling Tape volumes.
Step by Step process of Creating Storage Pool.
Step-1: Login to TSM Administration command line, Define Storage Pool
Note:- Storage Pool can be created with various types shown below in the below pic, in this example, I am going to show with disk based pool creation
define stgpool SERVERPOOL disk stgtype=devclass pooltype=primary description="Primary SERVERPOOL"
You have successfully completed the creation of Disk pool, by default, this does not have any space allocated to it, so we have to attach the volumes, this example we are going to show the Disk based volume.
Step-2: create and assign the volume to Storage pool
define volume SERVERPOOL e:\serverpool\disk01.dsm formatsize=1000
